Although I am not a religious man, I got to see a little slice of heaven at Highland Ranch. Driving on to the property we passed a sleepy little lake sitting against the picturesque backdrop of rolling hills and giant trees. Driving further was the main house which is surrounded by flowers, rocking chairs and hammocks. As soon as we entered the house we were greeted with a gracious smile and a glass of lemonade. All of the guests gathered in the main house for a drink before dinner. George Gaines, the proprietor of Highland Ranch, held court in what appeared to be his living room, surrounded by family photos and personal belongings. The next day began with a glorious breakfast followed by a day of horseback riding through the redwoods, catnaps in the hammocks and a romantic walk to the lake. Oh and did we mention the rules of the ranch? There are only two, but they are important; do not hurry and do not scare the horses. - Tell 'em Dusty Dave sent ya!
