| Azulik / Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico / 1-888-898-9922 www.azulik.com / reservations@ecotulum.com Let me just start by saying that Azulik is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed. If you've dreamed of vacationing right next to the ocean in a thatched roof cabana, then look no further, because honestly I can't imagine how it could get any better than this. When I was sitting on the deck looking out over the ocean with a cold Corona in my hand, I really thought that this must be the pinnacle of vacationing. It was absolute heaven. Just the peaceful sound of the waves crashing into the beach, nothing else. One major reason that there aren't any other distracting noises is because there is no electricity. Ah, but don't worry, it's not that bad. Even though there isn't electricity to plug anything into, the cabanas do have a sink and bathtub with hot and cold running water, along with a flush toilet. The lighting is done with candles so the glow in the evening is spectacular. There are a bunch of windy paths through the dense vegetation that go all around the resort between the cabanas and in the evening they are all lined with candles. It's so surreal. I would recommend bringing a flashlight though, because when you come home in the evening from dinner or drinks or both, it can be a little challenging to find where to put your key in to open the door and then again to find the matches to light the candles once you do get in. I used the light from my cell phone which was hardly ideal, but it worked well enough. I'm not sure what I would have done if the battery had died. I might still be there, trying to get in. I guess that wouldn't be so bad. Another important thing to note: the beach at the resort is clothing optional, so if you're into that kind of thing, great. It took me a little while to get used to naked people walking all around but I eventually realized that it's not that big of a deal (although I never did get the guts to do it). The resort also has a spa and restaurant that you can go to pretty much all the time. The people that worked at the resort were especially friendly. I went around to quite a few other resorts and restaurants in the area and Azulik definitely seemed like the nicest to me. Also, many restaurants and rental places don't take credit cards for some reason and there are no ATM machines within several miles, so I suggest you bring plenty of cash. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, honeymoon or a special way to celebrate an anniversary, you can't go wrong at Azulik. It is fantastic! If you end up going, make sure and - Tell 'em Dusty Dave sent ya! |
