You can spend your day wandering around on little nature trails right outside the cabins or drive about 15 minutes to Glacier National Park. The drive to the top of the mountain pass is amazing. There are a ton of things to do in the area. We went to a bear viewing park which would be great for kids. There are several fly-fishing and whitewater rafting companies on the main road which organize trips. We also took a helicopter ride around Glacier National Park up and above the mountains which was one of the most incredible things I have ever done in my life. I was scared to death but loved every minute of it. Amtrack stops nearby and I am sure it would be a gorgeous way to get to Abbott Valley. We had a great time and left very relaxed.
