A Farm Does a Family Good by Dusty Dave |
|||
How now brown cow. Or black or tan for that matter (oooh, a black and tan sounds good right now.) Either way, it's all good. The milk tastes the same no matter what color the cow is, right? Brown cows don't make chocolate milk ya know. At least I don't think so? Maybe that should be the first thing you tell your kids to ask the farmer when you get there. So let's get down to the nitty-gritty, are there even some family farms still left in this country? I thought that they had all been bought up by those mega (Got Milk?) corporations and super-sized. Heck no! There are still a few left. Of course many of them have been snatched up, but that's even more of a reason for you to go visit the remaining few. Who knows how long it will be before they are all sent out to pasture. So throw some clothes in a bag (don't forget your green overalls), round up the little-ones and jump in the car. Mooooove out! Your kids are going to go crazy being able to hang out with a bunch of farm animals. Fuzzy, furry or feathered, they're all fun. Animals like chickens, ducks, goats, bunny rabbits and a slew of other interesting creatures just waiting to say hello. |
Howdy! Listed below are a few very nice places that I have picked out for your convenience. You are free to share all the information and photos in this press release with your readers. Just click on any image for a high-res version. Have a great day & Giddy-Up! Dusty Dave |

Farm Helping out with the chores never seemed so fun. Put on your chore boots; ditch the attitude and head on over to the barn. There’s plenty to do, starting with hand pumping the water for the animals, feeding the goats, sheep and chickens, and collecting eggs. If you’re extra lucky, the baby chicks may have just hatched and you can feed them too. When you’re done with the chores, you can either talk to the cows and rabbits or take off on a hike. When you get back from your hike and you want to cool off, take a dip in the pool. Being just 45 minutes southwest of Pittsburgh, you can easily visit for the day or make a weekend out of it. |
Mountain
Valley Farm
Waitsfield, Vermont One thing you can be sure of that kids always love is horse-drawn wagon rides. How can you not love ‘em? They’re so much fun! The scenery around the farm is phenomenal too, with stunning views of the Mad River Valley and surrounding Green Mountains you can’t go wrong. The farm also offers hayrides, formal carriage rides and sleigh rides in the winter. Other fun things that you can do include petting the animals and collecting duck eggs. Of course one of the best things to do is strolling the grounds and watching the horses grazing. The nearby towns offer canoeing, kayaking and even have some pretty nice golf courses too. |
Hull-O-Farms Steeped deep in family and farm tradition, Hull-O Farms goes way back. Seven generations back to be exact!!. Now your family can experience what it’s like to be a part of that tradition. There’s something to be said of the feeling that you get from walking on farmland that has been in one family since the Declaration of Independence was signed. Gathering freshly laid warm eggs, milking a cow, learning how to feed the baby animals, and maybe even helping deliver a calf will create memories that will bond your family forever. This bucolic vacation is just two and a half hours from New York City and only one hour from Albany, NY. |
Liberty
Hill Farm
Rochester, Vermont Nestled between the White River and the Green Mountains, Liberty Hill Farm is exactly what you would picture when you think of a classic dairy farm. There’s a big red barn and a big ol’ farmhouse. With 18 rooms, seven of which are guest rooms, you shouldn't’t have too hard of a time finding somewhere to put your feet up. There’s even a large homey kitchen where everyone hangs out and chats. As far as stuff to do: You are always invited down to the barn to watch the milking, to feed the baby calves or to play with one of the many kittens running around. Meals are served family style; with everyone sitting around one table, and you can be sure the milk’s fresh. |
| Blue
Heron Farm What do you put on your pancakes? If you said chocolate, you’re a little strange. If you said maple syrup, then you’re probably like a couple million others. And where does all that syrup come from? One major producer is Blue Heron Farm who somehow manages to squeeze close to 800 gallons of the stuff out of their trees each year. This family-run 140-acre farm located two hours west of Boston also has a few other attractions, which move around a lot more than the trees. They are the Boer goats and the Norwegian Fjord horses. For those of you that have always wondered what it’s like to be a real farmer, you are more than welcome to try your hand at milking a goat, grooming horses or throwing around some hay bales.

Berkson
Farms
Enosburg Falls, Vermont Berkson Farms is a full-on working dairy farm set amongst 600 acres of beautiful rolling Vermont greenery. That should be enough space for you to stretch your legs or to search out that perfect picnic shade tree. Locals include bunnies, sheep, ducks, geese, chickens, goats and “Jack” the donkey. They are all very friendly and would love to get to know you and your kids. Not far from the farm, you will find a golf course, some tennis courts and a great place to go horseback riding. What are you waiting for? Make your reservations today and you'll be hanging out with Jack by tomorrow. |
Apple
Pond Farm Always wanted to try your hand at milking? Here’s your chance to see first hand where the milk comes from for that tasty feta cheese that goes into your Greek salad. Or how about that wool sweater you love so much? You might just get the chance to thank the sheep personally that donated its extra locks. Located in the Catskills, just two hours from the big apple, Apple Pond Farm is definitely an overachiever. Besides offering educational farm tours full of cute little sheep, goats and horses, they also offer renewable energy workshops describing wind, photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal and micro hydro energy systems. |
Hollister
Hill Farm
Marshfield, Vermont Sure enough, it is on a hill, and the original owners were called the Hollisters. Today it's still on a hill, but instead of a dairy farm, the focus is now on raising beefalo, hogs, chickens and turkeys. What is a beefalo exactly? Good question, that’s for everybody else in the world to know and for you to find out. What is there to do at this farm? Of course you could just hang out on the porch all day with a good book or you could make it your job to make sure all these animals don’t go hungry. Otherwise, you can always throw on your gym shoes and get some exercise with a long bike ride or a brisk walk along the many back roads and country trails. Have fun! |
