find excellent hiking conditions atop the ash and cinder fields of the caldera

and brown bears. A few parties of intrepid rafters run the challenging Aniakchak
River each year, mostly in July. In three or four days, you can float from
Surprise Lake, past treeless tundra, to the ocean. A hefty budget and pre-tested
skills and gear are essential."

refuge's fertile farmed fields, hedgerows, forests, and wetlands provide a
variety of wildlife habitats. Wildlife observation and photography, hiking,

geese’s need for a quiet resting area, much of the refuge is closed

"Good Hope Country House","Trelawny","At Good Hope
there is lots and lots to do.... or not do. Set on a 2000 acre plantation,
there is much to explore. Take a guided horse ride along the river and citrus
fields. Arise early for an energizing walk along the numerous paths, looking
at the old ruins and lots of nature. Visit the pottery studio of David Pinto,
and if possible, arrange to play with our local clay or get a lesson. Go for
a swim by the river, jumping off the docks into the refreshing water. "
"Bering Land Bridge National Preserve ","Alaska","Grizzly
bears, foxes, wolves and moose also inhabit the preserve. Eskimos from neighboring
villages manage reindeer herds in the preserve. Other interesting features
are rimless volcanoes called Maar craters, the largest on earth, Serpentine
Hot Springs and the seabird colonies at Sullivan Bluffs. Most visitors fly
from Nome and Kotzebue to reach this 2.7-million-acre preserve."

are more popular with boaters than anglers. There is much kayaking and the
state park includes a primitive boat launch."
"Bizz Johnson Trail ","California","The trail follows
the old Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific railroad, extending
25.4 miles from Susanville to Mason Station. For the first 16 miles, the trail
follows the Susan River. As it winds through the rugged Susan River Canyon,
the trail crosses the river 12 times over bridges and trestles and passes
through two tunnels. The landscape is a combination of semi-arid canyon and
upland forests of pine and fir."
"Boundary Dam and Pend Oreille River ","Washington","Visitors
can see elk, bears, deer and other wildlife along the shore. Those who float
down the river by raft or boat can fish for rainbow trout. Huckleberries are
in season beginning in early July."
"Bridal Veil Falls State Scenic Viewpoint ","Oregon","Peering
into the 400-foot depth of the gorge reveals such geological formations as
the Pillars of Hercules, two vertical columns with a railroad line running
between them. Interpretive displays detail local plants and wildlife, as well
as local history that includes the rise and fall of the Bridal Veil Lumber
Company, whose decrepit abandoned buildings are still visible nearby."
"Bullards Beach State Park ","Oregon","Across the
river is Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, sporting a variety of resident
and migrating wildlife. The Coquille River Lighthouse is at the end of the
park. It is staffed in summer with volunteers who lead tours to the tower.
From the lighthouse, there are 4.5 miles of open beach to explore. Many mountain
bikers enjoy the hard-packed sand along the edge of the surf."
"Caines Head State Recreation Area ","Alaska","The
6,000-acre recreation area, reached by boat or foot from Lowell Point, is
a favorite spot for hikers and campers. Boaters anchor off North Beach and
take a dinghy to shore. Kayaks and other small boats can be brought up on
shore. Marine birds are abundant, as are sea mammals such as seals, sea otters,
whales, sea lions and porpoises. Shore animals living in the area include
mountain goats, brown and black bears, wolves, wolverines, marmots and coyotes.

"Cape Lookout State Park ","Oregon","A 2.4-mile hiking
trail through a stand of Sitka spruce to the tip of Cape Lookout offers dramatic
views. Also running through the park is a three-mile stretch of the Oregon
Coastal Trail. Maritime history buffs should visit Cape Meares Lighthouse,
administered by Cape Lookout State Park, about 11 miles north. Anglers catch
ocean perch from the beach and fish for trout and bass in nearby lakes. Shorebirds,
raptors and many other avian species attract many birdwatchers."

Captain James Cook, the famous English mariner who explored what is now called

"Champoeg State Heritage Area ","Oregon","The birdwatching
is good, with ospreys and herons in residence. The seven-mile trail system
includes four miles for bike touring."
"Channel Islands National Park ","California","Island
topography varies from volcanic rock to wind-swept cliffs, sandy beaches to
dense kelp forests. All the islands have hiking trails. The Water Canyon trail
on Santa Rosa winds through oak groves, past caves, finally rising to spectacular
seaward vistas. Santa Cruz is the largest island. It is a haven for nesting
birds and was home to a community of Native Americans 6,000 years ago. One
hundred and forty-five of these species are unique to the islands and found
nowhere else in the world. Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to
the endangered blue whale, the largest animal to live on earth. "
"Chena River State Recreation Area ","Alaska","Temperatures
in the 250,000-acre park can reach 90 degrees in the summer and plunge to
40 below in winter. Because of the varied climate, the treeline is around
3,000 feet on most trails, making alpine vegetation accessible to most hikers.
Many Alaskan wildlife species abound at the recreation area, and decoding
animal tracks is one of the favorite pleasures of winter campers. Chena River
is also considered one of the state's prime moose-viewing areas."

a challenge, the Mount Riley Trail offers a vertical ascent, but the reward
is a sensational view of the entire region. This park also enjoy a run of
king salmon in early June."
"Chopaka Lake","Washington","Because this study area
is next to the recreation site, there is much fishing, hunting, hiking and
camping. No vehicles or mountain bikes are permitted in the wilderness study
area. Only canoes, kayaks and small, non-motorized boats are permitted on
the lake. The area's wildlife includes bears, mountain goats, deer and birds."
"Chugach National Forest ","Alaska","Visitors camp,
fish, watch spectacular wildlife on land and at sea and hike on some of the
most scenic trails in the nation. There are no developed ski facilities, but
many snowboard and go telemark skiing in the Turnagain Pass area. The Begich,
Boggs Visitor Center at Portage Glacier, 55 miles southeast of Anchorage,
offers panoramic views of the glacier and its iceberg-choked lake, plus guided
walks and boat excursions."
"Chugach State Park ","Alaska","Bird Point Scenic
Overlooko at Mile 96 of the Seward Highway was completed in late summer of
2000. The facility includes a wheelchair-accessible walkway that provides
spectacular views of Turnagain Arm and the Kenair Peninsula. Beluga whales
are sometimes spotted feeding near the point, as well as an occasional orca
whale and harbor seal. New in 1998 is the Ptarmigan Valley Trail, accessed
from the Old Glenn Highway at Chugiak. Hikers and equestrians share the trail
in summer."
"Clear Lake State Park ","California","Hikers enjoy
the Indian Nature Trail, a self-guided trail that details how the Pomo people
utilized the area’s resources for centuries. The trail passes through
the site of what was once a Pomo village. The park visitor center features
displays about the area’s cultural and natural history. Manzanita, mountain
mahogany, chamise and Toyon berries appear in the fall and winter. The park
is part of the state's hike-and-bike system and offers campsites for hikers
and cyclists."
"Collier Memorial State Park ","Oregon","The Williamson
River and Spring Creek meet in the park. The river is regionally famous for
its trout fishery and consistently produces trophy fish. Spring Creek gushes
dramatically from a nearby spring and then presents a picture-perfect scene

"Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area ","Oregon","On
land, there are more than 200 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding,

Forest Pass is needed to park at certain trailheads on national forest land.
In the water, visitors enjoy spectacular windsurfing, fishing, boating and

Wilderness, situated on the wet, west slopes of the Selkirk Mountains, offers
wildlife, huge, old-growth trees and few people. Less primitive recreation

area. The forest hosts the only caribou recovery area in the continental United

"Crater Lake National Park ","Oregon","Many of the
90 miles of park trails are strenuous, but hikers are rewarded with spectacular
displays of wildflowers, dramatic canyons and mystical views of Crater Lake.
The park's paved roads are popular with touring bicyclists, especially the
Rim Drive, which is open from July through September. Mountain bikers are
allowed on the Grayback nature road. Except for Sun Creek, all water bodies
in the park are open to fishing, and species include rainbow trout and Kokanee

"Death Valley National Park ","California"," Dante's
View, at 5,474 feet, offers a vista of nearly all of Death Valley. Badwater,

bikers may use established roads, but are barred from trails. The park service
offers interpretive guided hikes, walks and evening programs. "
"Deception Pass State Park ","Washington","There
are 35 miles of hiking trails in the park, most of them short hikes through
two natural forest areas. The Cascadian Trail flows through the park, a favorite
float for kayakers, though tidal influences can make the water rough. There
are designated water trail campsites at the pass. Cranberry and Pass Lakes
are excellent for canoeing and fishing. Fly fishing for Atlantic salmon at
Pass Lake is catch and release, but Cranberry yields a tasty supply of rainbow
and German brown trout, perch and bass."
