Wild at Heart
“Nothing says romance like a remote cabin, a crackling fire and a bearskin rug,” says author Dusty Dave. The avid outdoorsman should know — he spent over six years taking roads less traveled to discover the ideal getaways featured in his comprehensive new book The Top 100 Most Beautiful Rustic Vacations of North America. We asked the continent-comber to list the five most romantic locales guaranteed to bring out the animal in her. Dave reports:
1. Azulik Seaside Hotel - Quintana Roo, Mexico
Located seaside with warm waves crashing in, Azulik is the ultimate in romance. No phones or electricity, an adults-only atmosphere and a clothing-optional beach makes heated romance as easy as ordering room service (which, by the way is a little unique: Just place a little red flag outside your door and in a couple minutes your wishes will be fulfilled).

2. Costanoa Coastal Lodge and Camp - Pescadero, California
Just an hour from San Francisco, and adjacent to four state parks, this outdoor lover's paradise is packed full of fun activities including hiking through majestic redwoods, mountain biking on backcountry trails and cruising the surf on guided kayaking expeditions. You'll want to opt for one of their more rustic canvas tent cabins.

3. Dunton Hot Springs - Dolores, Colorado
This is as cool as it gets for a hot springs resort. Hidden deep in the beautiful San Juan Mountains, this resort is so remote that Butch Cassidy and Sundance once hid out here and actually carved their names into the bar. With five-star meals from their private chef, massage therapies and amazing natural hot springs, things will definitely heat up.

4. Hacienda del Cerezo - Santa Fe, New Mexico
With each room having a private patio, fireplace, sitting area, king-size bed and oversized Jacuzzi tub, it is doubtful that you will ever venture outside.

5. Hotelito Desconocido - Jalisco, Mexico
Designed to look and feel like an old Mexican fishing village, Hotelito is romance. From the gauze netting draped seductively over the beds to the dim flickering candlelight casting magical shadows on the walls of your bungalow, you will savor every moment of this fashionably primitive resort.
